A member of the Seven Deacons of Jerusalem who were chosen by the Apostles to minister to the Hellenized Jews of the Nazarene community in Jerusalem. Reputedly, he later became the bishop of Nicomedia and was put to death at Antioch, probably during the persecutions of Emperor Nero.
